Shane Taurima (Rongomaiwahine, Ngāti Kahungunu) is a passionate advocate for the power of storytelling to revitalise Indigenous cultures and strengthen communities. As Kaihautū (Chief Executive) of Whakaata Māori, Shane leads an organisation dedicated to promoting the Māori language, culture, and Indigenous perspectives across Aotearoa New Zealand and around the world.

With 30 years of experience in broadcasting, politics, and leadership grounded in Māori values and worldviews, Shane brings strategic vision, deep expertise, and a strong commitment to Indigenous media excellence. Under his leadership, Whakaata Māori has expanded its reach through platforms such as MĀORI+, teaonews.co.nz, and enhanced live and on-demand Māori content.

Guided by Te Huapae, the organisation’s long-term strategy for impact, Shane and his team focus on language revitalisation, workforce development, and strengthening cultural identity. His leadership ensures Māori stories are visible, valued, and shared across diverse platforms.

As Chairperson of the World Indigenous Broadcasters Network (WIBN), Shane collaborates with Indigenous media leaders globally to advance storytelling sovereignty and cross-cultural connection.

For Shane, Whakaata Māori is more than a broadcaster it is a movement to honour Indigenous stories, strengthen language, and inspire future generations.
