Johan Ailo Kalstad currently holds the position of Director at NRK Sápmi, the Sámi division of the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK), a government-owned public service broadcaster. NRK Sápmi is devoted to delivering content tailored to the Sámi people, the indigenous population of northern Europe residing in Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia.
Rooted in Guovdageaidnu, a Sámi town in the northern part of Sápmi, Johan Ailo is fluent in Northern Sámi and has obtained a Master's degree in Business Administration alongside a Bachelor's degree in Journalism. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his role at NRK Sápmi, having worked with various Sámi organizations and previously serving as the Director of the Sámi University of Applied Sciences.
NRK Sápmi, one of the oldest Sámi institutions, produces daily radio, television, and online content for all segments of the Sámi population in Norway. The organization broadcasts and publishes content in three Sámi languages—Northern, Lule, and Southern Sámi—as well as in Norwegian, and maintains close collaborations with SVT Sápmi, SR Sameradion, and YLE Sápmi, its sister organizations in Sweden and Finland.
Under Johan Ailo Kalstad's leadership, NRK Sápmi remains dedicated to preserving and promoting Sámi culture and language while amplifying the voice of the Sámi people. With a strategic focus on digital transformation and prioritizing engagement with a younger audience, NRK Sápmi is poised to make significant contributions to the Sámi community and the media industry.
