Dan Bourchier
General Manager, NITV Australia.
Dan Bourchier, the storyteller, award-winning journalist and media leader has returned to First Nations media company NITV, after beginning his broadcast career there, almost 15 years ago.
He joins SBS with a dual role as senior broadcaster with the public service broadcaster.
Dan is an Aboriginal man, who grew up in the remote Northern Territory town of Tennant Creek, where he was mentored by Warramungu Elders as well as Old People from around the region and other Elders who came to live in the outback town, while connecting with his First Nations heritage from his Mum’s family in Victoria.
Dan brings grounded governance and leadership, built on a media career spanning almost 30 years, forged on community grounding and ethical leadership.
Most recently Dan was a senior broadcaster at the ABC, while also chairing the influential Bonner Committee advisory board where he called for a review into allegations of racism at the ABC. He then worked as part of a senior leadership team to design the process, assist in the compiling of the groundbreaking report by Dr Terri Janke, and then to help with the initial implementation.
In 2023, Dan was the ABCs Voice/Referendum Correspondent and headed up the reporting coverage across the ABC. He was also a host of The Drum, and reported for Four Corners, regularly appeared on Insiders, and reported across radio, TV, online and social media at the ABC.
Dan was part of the team who worked to embed Ngunnawal names and language on to the ABC in Canberra, becoming the first broadcasts across the ABC to include First Nations names and language, following a culturally appropriate and respectful consultation and co-design. This led to the inclusion and elevation of Indigenous voices, names, and languages across the ABC, and influenced the use of First Nations names by corporate Australia.
